Today, MTN worked closely with the South Africa Police Service to arrest an individual suspected of stealing airtime vouchers worth approximately R5 million. This comes after an intense internal investigation that led to the arrest in the early hours today.

"MTN aims to ensure that our customers are protected and our systems are fully operational to enable us to deliver quality service to our consumers," explains Lilly Zondo, General Manager: Business Risk Management at MTN SA.

"Through continuous monitoring, which has taken us approximately 18 months, we were able to conclude the investigation and are satisfied too that the negative impact that may have been posed by the suspect is done away with."

Zondo concludes that cyber crime is on the increase globally; for MTN, this arrest is a big "breakthrough". "We have been proactive in our approach, and this is testament to prudent work done."

The matter is now sub-judice, therefore, MTN is unable to divulge further details regarding the case.
