NHBRC trains persons with disabilities in construction skills

On Tuesday 12th of December 2017, the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) handed over certificates in plumbing to 13 trainees with disabilities at the Khayelitsha Training Centre, in Cape Town.

The training in these skills forms part of the NHBRC's Social Transformation and Empowerment Programme (STEP) aimed at capacitating youth, women, military veterans and people with disabilities with technical skills so that they can actively participate in the home building industry.

The trainees achieved the following unit standards:

* Planning and preparing to perform plumbing works.* Installation and maintenance of drainage systems.* Installation and maintenance water supply systems.

The training sessions were conducted by Industries Education and Training Institute, who are registered facilitators in modules that are accredited at NQF level 2 to 4 with the Construction Education and Training Authority. The training included practical site assistance and classroom based teaching.

"The NHBRC is more than just a regulator and enforcer of building standards, we are also offering a number training programmes catering for the youth, military veterans, women and people with disabilities who are interested to participate in the home building industry. This is us playing our part to make inroads into bringing down the high unemployment levels and contribute to mainstreaming these marginalised groups of people," said NHBRC CEO, Mziwonke Dlabantu.
