The power cuts that affected parts of South Africa at the beginning of March have led to a sharp rise in the popularity of generators on SA's online marketplace, www.bidorbuy.co.za.
Taken together, the four most popular varieties of the term (generator, generators, petrol generator and diesel generator) have climbed several hundred rungs to take the very top place among the most popular searches on the site during the past week. On average, bidorbuy.co.za records over 5 000 searches for about 300 terms every day.
Sellers on the site are currently offering for sale more than 100 generators, with prices ranging from about R3 000 for 2kVA to 3kVA devices, to just under R200 000 for a 100kVA device.
Other products that are seeing an increase in popularity due to the fear of load-shedding are gas-powered kitchen appliances, standalone or built-in hobs and stoves.
The price range of the gas stoves currently listed on bidorbuy range from under-R2 000 for a four-burner with oven, to close to R40 000 for an elaborate gas and electricity combo with three electric ovens, six gas burners and two electric plates.
