Public Enterprises' Deputy Minister, Bulelani Magwanishe, and the Deputy Minister of Communications, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, in partnership with Denel SOC, will on Saturday roll out a service delivery programme at the Ingquza Hill Municipality, at Flagstaff, in the Eastern Cape.
The roll out of services to the community is a result of the establishment of the DPE/ State Owned Companies (SOCs) Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Forum by the department. The forum aims to ensure collaboration of all CSI projects by SOCs reporting to the department to form a partnership that will result in a holistic and synergistic approach in bringing development to communities.
The CSI Forum also aims to identify the under-developed communities in the country and research what services and projects would most likely make a long-term impact for the sustainability of the communities.
The Ingquza Hill Municipality was identified as an area that needs such holistic intervention, particularly if SOCs make contributions towards the development in the area. The Ingquza community is beset by challenges relating to infrastructure backlogs, high levels of poverty and underdevelopment.
On Saturday, 19 October 2013, Deputy Ministers Magwanishe and Ndabeni-Abrahams will lead a CSI programme at the Ingquza Hill Municipality where the following deliverables will be officially handed over:
* OR Tambo IT Centre: About 30 computers have been donated to the Holy Cross Church, where a computer centre will be established to be accessible to the whole community.
* Telematics Learning Support System: The telematics system is an electronic visual classroom where University of Stellenbosch tutors will be conducting tutorials to learners in disadvantaged communities from Grades 10 to 12, particularly in maths and science, to assist with upgrading the skills levels of learners in the subjects. The system will be installed at the Jikindaba High School with the Internet connectivity sponsored by the MESO Group.
* Career Expo: DPE SOC will be exhibiting and providing career guidance and advice on bursary opportunities at SOCs to ensure learners make the correct career choices in line with the skills needs of the economy.
* The Department of Communications, in conjunction with its entities, will showcase key interventions and programmes, including a digital migration exhibition.
