SANRAL doubles Gwaing River Bridge on N2

Issued by SANRAL
Western Cape, Mar 16, 2018

SANRAL is pleased to inform the residents of George of the widening of the Gwaing River Bridge crossing on the N2, to double its existing capacity.

The Gwaing River Bridge is on the N2 near George Airport between the R404 interchange and the York Street Interchange, and currently services a significant amount of light and heavy-duty vehicle traffic. The contractor is currently setting up the construction site, and construction will be limited to the N2 only.

Safety is always a priority, and as such, the work area will be protected by concrete barriers. There will always be at least one lane in each direction open to public traffic and no STOP/GO traffic accommodation is envisaged. A surfaced bypass will also be constructed alongside the N2 to accommodate traffic during the realignment of the carriageways and, where necessary, flagmen will be deployed to control the traffic.

In keeping with SANRAL's commitment to minimising the effect of construction projects on the natural environment, an environmental management plan has been developed, to which the contractor must adhere.

Road users are requested to be patient during delays when a carriageway has been reduced to a single lane and to exercise caution when using the road and bypass, at all times adhering to the relevant speed limits on this section of the road.

The anticipated completion date is July 2020, notwithstanding weather-related delays or any unexpected conditions encountered. Once completed, the upgrading will provide separate bridges for each carriageway and will eliminate the current bottleneck at the river crossing. This will not only improve the road user experience, but will significantly increase the safety of road users.

Contact details for emergencies will be displayed on the signage in the construction area. SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused during construction.
