Deviation of traffic to demolish existing overpass bridge over N1 Polokwane

Issued by SANRAL
Pretoria, Nov 8, 2016

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) would like to notify the public and road users of road closures around Polokwane. Demolition of the existing "Hotel" bridge linking the R101 with local farms and the Protea Hotel will start on 9 November 2016.

The structure will be demolished by means of blasting.

The traffic travelling north from Nyl Plaza will be diverted onto the R101 towards Polokwane. The N1 will be closed from the Roodepoort/N1 intersection where the traffic will be diverted onto the R101, thus the N1 from Nyl Plaza to the Roodepoort intersection will be closed for traffic on 9 November 2016.

The timeline for 9 November 2016 will be phased as follows:

* 07:00 - divert traffic from Nyl Plaza onto the R101. * 07:00 - divert traffic from Roodepoort, N1 Intersection onto the R101. * 08:45 - close R101 600m on either side of the bridge. * 09:00 - demolish the bridge structure using explosives and inspection. * 09:10 - open the R101 for traffic. * 09:10 to 18:00 - clearing the N1 of rubble. * 18:00 - open the N1 for traffic.

SANRAL is in the process, with major upgrades and new construction, of the N1 ring road around Polokwane. As part of the project, a new overpass close to the Shell Ultra City will be constructed to accommodate the new N1 re-alignment.

Due to the upgrades, road users are urged to deviate from their normal routes and use the selected alternative routes to reach their various destinations.

The following road closure will be implemented on 9 November 2016:

1. Traffic travelling north (and south) around Polokwane via the N1 Ring Road will be diverted as follows:

The N1 will be completely closed for traffic travelling north towards Polokwane between the Nyl and Sebetiela Toll Plaza, as well as between Sebetiela Toll Plaza and Roodepoort Intersection, whereby traffic will be diverted onto the R101. Traffic travelling south will continue their journey on the newly constructed Casino Road to the R101. Thus will the N1 be closed for north and south bound traffic between the Nyl Plaza and the Roodepoort (to Meropa Casino) Intersection.

2. Traffic travelling from Meropa Casino wishing to drive north or south will be accommodated as follows:

Traffic from the N1-27 Polokwane Ring Road and the Meropa Casino that wish to travel south towards Pretoria will make use of the newly constructed Casino Road onto the R101.

Patience and co-operation of motorists will be appreciated.

SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks you for your patience during the construction period.

The agency takes its mandate from government seriously to manage and maintain the national road network.

In so doing, the safety and well-being of road users and the communities in which it operates are paramount.
