ITWeb, SA's premier source of ICT news, is now available on your cellphone at http://itweb.mobi.

ITWeb.mobi features the same content as its popular Web site, offering readers breaking news headlines in a format optimised for mobile platforms.

ITWeb's site is accessed by 80 000 unique readers a month. The majority of them are ICT professionals, decision-makers and business owners, explains editorial director Ranka Jovanovic, and the mobi site will make it easier for them to keep up with the fast-paced IT and telecoms sector news.

In a longer run, ITWeb.mobi will attract new readers - ICT graduates, start-ups and other new entrants to the industry who are not migrating from the desktop, but rather using their cellphone as their primary Internet access device.

Mobile is the fastest growing way of connecting to the Web. Research firm World Wide Worx, in its Mobile Internet in South Africa 2010 study, found that 9.5 million South Africans can surf the Internet on their cellphones, almost double the number of people who use PCs to access the net. However, less than half of urban cellphone users who have Internet-capable phones currently use the Internet - a statistic that points to the possibility of an explosion of mobile Internet users within the next five years.

Jovanovic says the mobi site will complement other alternative channels for people to reach ITWeb content, including Twitter and Facebook.

ITWeb's sister business unit, CareerWeb, recently launched its own mobi version offering the latest updates of available vacancies to job-seekers.

CareerWeb is an online recruitment portal for people looking for jobs in the ICT sector, and provides employers with a range of highly-skilled candidates.

In just 20 days after launching, the CareerWeb mobi site achieved 13 000 hits, proving to be a success with its niche market.

Technical director Sinisa Jovanovic explains that the technology behind the mobi site provides advanced speed for mobile browsers regardless of the mobile operating system they are using.
