MTN's ongoing investment in optomising its network continues to yield the best experience for the increasing number of customers who are opting to use smartphones. This was confirmed in an independent report that once again found MTN to be the best mobile network in South Africa in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Being voted the best mobile network means MTN customers who use smart devices can do applications such as surfing the Internet, browsing social media, sending and receiving e-mails and downloading and watching videos more seamlessly and faster than users on other networks.

The findings of the network performance test by MyBroadband have once again confirmed that MTN has the best mobile network in South Africa, including in the major metropolitan cities in Tshwane, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

"We believe that improved customer experience hinges on superior network performance. Attaining technology leadership and providing our customers with world-class network performance is the cornerstone of our strategy. We are pleased that independent tests have once again confirmed the superiority of our network and we are confident that our customers, who are the final arbiters, will attest to this as they continue to enjoy a seamless and distinctive network experience that is second to none," says Jacqui O'Sullivan, Executive for Corporate Affairs at MTN SA.

According to the results of the network performance tests, MTN scored 9.85 out of 10 in the Mobile Network Quality Score, outperforming all mobile network operators in South Africa. This is based on the mobile network performance of download speeds of 40.64 megabits per second (Mbps), upload speeds of 14.65Mbps and latency of 32ms (milliseconds).

In the city of Tshwane, MTN's network achieved download speeds of 54.54Mbps, upload speeds of 17.91Mbps and latency of 32ms. In Johannesburg, MTN's network registered download speeds of 47.38Mbps, upload speeds of 16.54Mbps and latency of 27ms, while in Cape Town, download speeds recorded during the test period are 44.24Mbps, upload speeds 14.47Mbps and latency of 28ms.

In Durban, MTN's network performance was equally impressive, delivering download speeds of 44.70Mbps, upload speeds of 14.47Mbps and latency of 28ms.

"We believe that the ongoing interventions to optimise our network stand us in good stead to deliver on our brand promise of leading the delivery of a bold, new digital world for our customers," O'Sullivan concludes.

The MyBroadband Network Quality Report is based on results from the quarterly network performance tests, which were recorded between 1 October 2019 and 31 December 2019. Approximately 11 949 unique users conducted 310 649 speed tests during the fourth quarter of 2019.
