Nationwide mobile network testing project rates MTN best in SA
MTN's network quality has once again been proven to be the best in South Africa following a comprehensive nationwide project measuring the data speeds of the five major mobile operators in South Africa's major and secondary cities across all nine provinces.
Following rigorous testing, MTN's network quality held the top position in a significant majority of all the areas surveyed. The national overall test found that MTN's average download speed was 33.4Mbps, with the operator holding the second-place position, averaging a download speed of only 24.6Mbps.
The initiative, led by the MyBroadband team, measured coverage and data throughput and included key performance indicators such as download and upload speed and latency tests in each area.
"We have been deliberate in ensuring that customer satisfaction is at the heart of our network strategy. Knowing that the quality of our network has been tested across the country and has again been found to be delivering the value we have promised our customers, further bolsters our commitment and desire to keep connecting the unconnected. We are proud and heartened that our efforts are truly connecting South Africans to the digital world they deserve," says Giovanni Chiarelli, MTN SA's Chief Technology and Information Officer.
Chiarelli points to MTN's investment of over R40 billion to deliver high-performance networks over the past four years. "It is this investment that has helped us achieve over 94% 4G coverage across South Africa to deliver best network experience to our customers," he adds.
MTN is proud to have delivered not only in the major cities, but also smaller cities and towns. "The people of Pietermaritzburg, Newcastle, East London, Port Elizabeth, Richard's Bay and many other towns deserve the same quality MTN experience as the major metros and we will keep working to deliver that quality for all our customers," he says.
In July this year, MTN had been recognised for the third consecutive quarter as the best and fastest network in South Africa in the MyBroadband Mobile Network Quality Report for Q2 2019.
