MTN has been named Best Mobile Network in South Africa for the third successive quarter of this year. This is according to independent network performance tests and crowd source data-based research conducted by MyBroadband over the third quarter of 2020 which named MTN as the Best Mobile Network, and similarly MTN Best Mobile Network in Q1 and Q2.

MTN achieved a Network Quality Score of 9.68 (96.8%), outperforming the second runner-up, who scored 5.99 (59.9%), by a wide margin. The network score is a value which shows the relative performance of networks, with a maximum score of 10.

Over Q3 2020, MTN’s network averaged download speeds of 55.11 Mbps, upload speeds of 22.78 Mbps and a latency of 38 ms as quantified by over 15000 unique MyBroadband Android Speed Test App users who conducted over 334000 speed tests as well as Mybroadband’s own initiated drive tests.

These results also outperform South Africa’s average mobile network performance, which is sitting at upload speeds of 29.16, upload speeds of 11.46 and latency of 37ms.

Our commitment to serving customers will always be at the core of what we do. This year has presented many challenges for so many across the country; we’re just happy that we could offer a reliable network that kept people connected to each other through it all,” says Jacqui O’Sullivan, Corporate Affairs Executive: MTN SA.“

MTN SA’s network has also emerged as the Best Network in Tshwane, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban where it achieved a Network Quality Score of 9.87 (98.7%), 9.81 (98.1%)., 9.84 (98.4%) and 9.97 (99.7%) respectively.

“Over the past few months we have implemented not only transmission capacity upgrades, core capacity management and load-balancing improvements, but also several measures to deal with traffic volume on our network, and further investments to capacitate our sites so more customers can enjoy the best quality network experience are in planning”, concludes O’Sullivan.

The MyBroadband Network Quality Report is based on results from MyBroadband’s Android Speed Test App which were recorded between 1 July 2020 and 30 September 2020. The download speed (60%), upload speed (20%), and latency (20%) is used to calculate an overall weighted Network Quality Score. This Network Quality Score is a relative Benchmark index based on a value of 10 equating to the best Download Speed, Upload Speed and Latency with all other operators scored relative to the Speeds and Latency that determined this score so performance gaps between operators can be easily quantified.
