NWU Mafikeng Campus appoints new vice-rector

Professor Luvuyo Lumkile Lalendle, former Director of Quality Promotion and Assurance at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, was appointed as the new new Vice-Rector, Teaching, Learning and Quality Assurance at the North-West University Mafikeng Campus since 1 May 2014.

Prof. Lalendle has worked in Higher Education institutions for 28 years holding various positions in South Africa and in the United States of America, ranging from being an instructor to that of Head of Department at a higher education institution.

His academic career started at the Butterworth College of Education in 1986 as a lecturer and in 1990 he joined the University of Venda as a lecturer. He was later promoted to a Senior Lecturer and Head of Department of Music in the School of Human and Social Sciences. After a term of 18 years at the University of Venda he joined the Council on Higher Education in the position of Director Institutional Audits.

Continuing his academic studies, Prof Lalendle received his PhD from Michigan State University in the United States of America. He was the president of the African Student Union at Michigan State University and a National executive member of staff Unions in South Africa i.e. UDUSA and NTESU.

Prof Lalendle has extensive experience and knowledge in Strategic Planning, Change Management, Development of High Performance work systems, Diversity and Equity, Human Resource Management and Labour and Industrial Relations. He serves on numerous professional bodies such as the Board of Trustees of Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Programme (TVEP), UNESCO NGO (ICTM), the University of Venda Council and the United Democratic Union of Staff Associations and the National Tertiary Education Staff Union.

He is a member of the panel that advice the National Heritage Council in South Africa and Minister of Arts and Culture and serves in the Board of Trustees of Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Programme (TVEP).

In the research realm he has conducted studies on institutional transformation, on the meaning, construction and practice of leadership and the development of high performance management system including total quality management systems. He is a strong advocate of personal transformation through reflective exercises as a way of adding value to change management and has published on a wide range of topics in higher education.
