Professor Sepeng appointed to assessment standards committee of Umalusi Council
Professor Percy Sepeng, Director of the School of Teacher Education and Training at the North-West University (Mafikeng Campus), has been recently appointed as a member of the assessment standards committee (mathematics) of Umalusi Council. His term of office started on 8 June 2014 and will run until 7 June 2018.
Some of his responsibilities as a committee member (for mathematics) includes, among others, to provide guidance to the Quality Assurance of Assessment unit on matters relating to establishing, maintaining and improving the standards and quality of assessments in the South African education system.
Furthermore, the committee carries out the process of standardisation and moderation of internal assessments and examination results for all qualifications that Umalusi certifies, including the Senior Certificate (SC), the National Senior Certificate (NSC), the National Certificates (Vocational), Report 191 and the GETC Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET).
Prof Sepeng is currently an independent evaluator and researcher at the South African Council for Educators (SACE), an evaluator of higher institutions' academic programmes for accreditation at the Council on Higher Education (CHE), and has reviewed over 10 school and university mathematics textbooks both locally and internationally.
He is currently involved in continuing professional development of mathematics teachers as well as subject specialists (or advisors) in three different provinces of South Africa.
Professor Sepeng holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mathematics Education from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Prior to joining NWU, he was employed by the University of South Africa as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics Education, Unisa College of Education. He was also employed by the Wits University as a Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy Education Lecturer and held a Mathematics and Language Research Thrust position in the Marang Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education. He has previously held lecturing positions at higher education institutions such as the Tshwane University of Technology, University of Johannesburg, and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University for over 15 years. He is also a mathematician by earlier training, a mathematics consultant, a teacher educator, material developer, curriculum reviewer, and an academic.
Prof Sepeng has been a mathematics consultant for various organisations such as the Mathematics Centre for Professional Teachers, Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, JET and Mindset Network for over 10 years.
His appointment to this committee is as a result of his expertise, knowledge and experience in the field of mathematics education.
