Faculty of Law appoints two extra-ordinary professors

North-West University, Mafikeng Campus's Faculty of Law has appointed two extra-ordinary professors for the period of three years. The two extra-ordinary professors appointed are Prof Omphemetse Sibanda and Prof Thandabantu Nhlapo.

This two Professors will be involved in the training of undergraduates as well as postgraduates in the Faculty of Law and will also be involved in the evaluation or assessment of students.

"We have recommended the appointment of these two extra-ordinary professors for strategic reasons, in particular to increase the pool of senior staff members to supervise students in new areas like Corporate Law, International Economic Law and Private Law" said the Dean of the Law Faculty, Prof Melvin Mbao.

Prof Omphemetse Sibanda is a Director at the University of South Africa (UNISA) College Of Law. He obtained his LLD from North-West University Mafikeng Campus. He has done outstanding work in terms of research and extensive community engagement in the North-West Province.

Prof Thadabantu Nhlapo is an outstanding scholar in Customary Law. He is former Deputy-Vice Chancellor at the University of Cape-town. From 2004-2008 Prof Nhlapo was appointed by President Mbeki to chair the commission on Traditional Leadership disputes and claims arising in the Traditional Leadership sector. He was previously the Deputy Chief of Mission and Deputy Ambassador at the embassy of South Africa in Washington DC (USA).

"Prof Nhlapo is now retired, but he has expressed the willingness to help us," added Prof Mbao.

"We are looking forward to tap into the huge experience and depth of scholarship of the two Professors" concluded Prof Mbao.
