North-West University, North West Government host research showcase

The North-West University, in collaboration with North West Provincial Government, hosted a research showcase from 21 to 23 October 2014 at the North-West University student centre hall.

The theme for this research showcase was Knowledge Bridge; "Supporting the implementation of vision 2030 through evidence-based research in and about North-West Province". The subthemes were mining, tourism and inclusive economy, sustainable rural development and population health, indigenous system and traditional affairs.

During his welcome address, Prof Lalendle, the Vice-Rector of Mafikeng Campus of North-West University, had this to say about the research showcase: "This research showcase is an exhibition of research that is done in North West about North West initiated by NW government through the North-West University. This collaborative approach is to build capacity in the province for decision-makers and government officials to make policies based on evidence.

"It's our desire and commitment to bring that by bringing research entities such as National Research Foundation (NRF), Mintek and Human Science Research Council (HSRC). Together we can form a partnership in solving problems that we have in the country," added Prof Lalendle.

"We as the North West Provincial government want to further the ideal of the National Development Plan 's Vision 2030 and build on the provincial plan to reduce poverty and unemployment. Together we can do more. We need to collaborate more with the university to better the lives of students and communities in our country," said the North West MEC for Tourism, Ms Desbo Mohono, during her address on the first day of the research showcase.

The research showcase was attended by, among others, the provincial premier, Supra Mahumapelo, different provincial MECs and heads of provincial departments, NWU Vice-Chancellor, Prof ND Kgwadi, Campus Rector, Prof Maselesele, academics in the university and other institutions and research entities like NRF, Mintek and HSRC.
