The North-West University's (NWU's) campus in Mahikeng recently delivered a sterling performance at the annual 2017 University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament.

The NWU team claimed top honours in karate, walking away with the second overall position and receiving a silver medal. In addition, the team also boasts several other accolades, including one gold, five silver and 12 bronze medals for individual performances. Three of the team members - Karabo Motlhabane, Onalenna Ndlangisa and Xolani Tlhomedi - were selected for the USSA national team.

In ladies soccer, the NWU ladies team coach, Thembi Mbatha, walked away with the accolade for best female coach. The men's soccer team, having conceded a loss to Tuks, walked away with the third overall position and received a bronze medal. The team also scooped the Team of the Tournament Award for their professionalism and discipline.

"The NWU is fast setting the record for the most consistent performance at any level of competition it takes part in. We are not only a high-quality institution of learning, but we also cater to youth sports development in various sporting codes, and the results speak for themselves," said Rick Van Rooyen.

USSA is a council responsible for the planning, organisation, administration and promotion of sporting codes across the country's universities.
