NWU Mafikeng choir makes university, province proud

NWU Mafikeng Campus choir made the campus, the North-West University and the North West Province proud by scooping the first position in the indigenous category at the prestigious Old Mutual National Choir Festival held in Durban from 5 to 7 December. The choir brought home a trophy and R50 000 prize money in the Indigenous category where it competed against nine other choirs.

The National Choir Festival is a national choral music competition conducted at district and regional/provincial level culminating in a national final. It is an annual event that runs from January to December. Old Mutual has given financial backing for this project since 1988. The name National Choir Festival (NCF) is widely recognised as a brand of its own in the choral music fraternity.

The project goes beyond the borders of South Africa, with choirs from Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Swaziland joining South African choirs in this exciting music development venture. It is considered to be the biggest and best of the choir festivals and draws attendants and fans from all over the country and SADC region.

"The CSRC is impressed by the dedication, teamwork and commitment shown by the members of the university choir. They have really managed to fly the university flag very high. We would like to congratulate you on behalf of the student populace of the North-West University," said Tutu Kgobane, the CSRC President, who also accompanied the choir to the National Choir Festival.

During the reception dinner for the choir, held on the evening of 8 December, the Campus Rector, Prof Mashudu Davhana-Maselesele, congratulated the choir for the job well done.

"We are proud of you as a campus for bringing something home and for being great ambassadors for the North-West University," said Prof Davhana-Maselesele.
