Community pledged R140 000 to university
The community of Mahikeng has pledged an amount of R140 000 to the North-West University, Mafikeng Campus. The money is to be used for bursaries for needy and deserving students. This came after the Vice-Chancellor of the NWU, Prof Dan Kgwadi, invited religious leaders, alumni of the university, government officials and business people to a stakeholder dinner with management at the Mmabatho Palms, on 8 March.
The aim of the dinner was to introduce and explain the new strategy of the NWU to the attendees and also give feedback on the events of the past few weeks.
During a question-and-answer session, it came out very strongly that the university means a lot to the community and that a stakeholder relations forum be established, which would work together with management to address the challenges of the university.
In demonstrating their commitment, they decided among themselves to make a financial contribution to the needy and deserving students of the Mafikeng Campus. Pledges varied from R10 000, R20 000 and R50 000. In thanking the audience, Prof Kgwadi said he was speechless and very touched by this gesture.
