NWU student to play in Afcon Cup
Tjipenandjambi ‘Tjipee’ Karuuombe, a second-year North-West University (NWU) mechanical engineering student, will participate in the upcoming U20 African Cup of Nations (Afcon Cup).
The brilliant defensive midfielder received a call-up from the Namibia Football Association after they witnessed his star performance while playing for the NWU’s De Wilgers men’s hostel.
“Getting national recognition from my home country is a dream come true,” says Karuuombe. “Over the years, I've worked and waited for an opportunity like this, and now that it has arrived, it truly feels amazing.”
The tournament will take place in Mauritania from 14 February until 6 March.
Karuuombe says juggling school and soccer is not easy, but his time management skills are what has helped him excel in both areas.
In the next five years, he would like to see himself playing for the Namibian senior national team.
The die-hard Manchester United fan says he looks up to the likes of Lionel Messi – who plays for Barcelona and the Argentinian national team – and Thiago Alcantara, who plays for Liverpool and Spain’s national team.
With his good passing and shooting range, tactical awareness and excellent stamina, Karuuombe is sure to make the NWU and Namibia proud.
