NWU boxing team tops USSA Championships
The NWU boxing team at the campus in Mahikeng obtained an overall winner during the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Championships, which was held from 2 to 4 July 2018 at NWU's campus in Mahikeng.
The team secured two bronze medals through Thato Tuwe and Tshepo Seponkane and six silver medals through Boitumelo Kobone, Phimi September, Lorencia Kale, Michael Khoathoane, Gideon Tshabalala and Serati Letsholo. They also secured seven gold medals through Lemogang Moote, Tshegofatso Lentswe, Nompumelelo Dlamini, Goitseone Kgopisho, Keoagile Morolong, Karabo Matloa and Lebogang Khalani.
Tshegofatso Lentswe was also awarded the Best Female Bout and Best Female Boxer of the tournament. Best Male Bout went to MUT and DUT in the 64kg division. Mhlomi S (MUT) received the medal for Best Male Boxer while NWU head coach Onalenna Tsae received a medal for Best Female Coach.
Chairperson of the NWU boxing team, Mr Jameson Mashimo, also received a medal for Best Referee/Judge of the tournament.
"We wish to thank Open Boxing Federation in the District and Province (NMMOBO and NWOBO), NWU Sports Department under the leadership of Mr Van Rooyen, all officials, coaches, technical and team managers and USSA executives for their great work in making this tournament a success," said Onalenna Tsae, the NWU coach.
NWU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dan Kgwadi, who attended both the opening ceremony and the closing function, congratulated the boxing team for hoisting the NWU flag high during this USSA Championships.
