Age is not a factor
For Lehlohonolo Phali (28), age is not a factor, as he became the youngest graduate at the North-West University Mafikeng Campus to receive a PhD degree in applied mathematics.
Phali grew up in Sebokeng in Gauteng and registered as a first-year student in 2005, with the sole purpose of studying mathematics. And despite facing many financial challenges, he managed to obtain his degree and went on to finally also attain his PhD degree.
He is a lecturer in applied mathematics in the Faculty of Agriculture, Science and Technology and aims to become a senior lecturer in order to supervise post-graduate students.
He attributed receiving his degree to the support of his mother and the late Professor Matthew Kambule, who played significant roles in his academic career.
