The motto of the library at the NWU Mafikeng Campus is that children who learn to enjoy reading in a favourable environment, at an early age, will continue to read for the rest of their lives. In line with that view, staff members of the library established a library at Slurry Primary School near Mahikeng by donating shelves, tables and chairs as part of their community outreach project.

According to the Information Librarian, Elsie Legwalehe, the aim for the donation was to promote a culture of reading within disadvantaged black schools. Legwalehe explained that the school already had books. However, they did not have a proper place in which to use them.

"The books have already been donated. However, it was not easily accessible, as there was no place to store them and the school could not afford to build a library," Legwalehe explained.

She emphasised that children who have access to books are able to stretch their imaginations, and books have a way of touching their emotions and expanding their horizons. The school greatly appreciated the assistance and indicated that any support is valued.
