In commemoration of Nelson Mandela's legacy, an academic lecture was held at the NWU Mafikeng Campus on 23 July 2014. It was the initiative of the CSRC and forms part of the 20 years of democracy celebrations. Mr Sello Hatang, the CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation presented the lecture and paid tribute to the life of Nelson Mandela. This follows days after the campus community took up the call for selflessness and follow in Madiba's footsteps by rendering their 67 minutes of service.

Mr Hatang started his address with thoughtful burning questions: Should a gay couple be granted the opportunity to adopt? Should a pregnant teen girl be given rights to abort her unborn foetus? Should a man who has raped a six-month-old toddler be given the death penalty? His speech was mainly based on human dignity, equality, human rights and freedom.

The initiative was very well received by management as this year is also a significant year, not only for the campus as it celebrates 10 years of the merger, but also to the rest of the county as it celebrates 20 years of democracy.

Different pictures of Nelson Mandela were posted on the walls which stole the attention of the audience as well as echoed the content of Mr Hatang's lecture.
