The Science Centre at the NWU Mafikeng Campus can be seen as a beacon of hope to many rural schools around Mafikeng, in the North West province. This can be said after a three-day Techno Youth Programme was held during the first week of the winter school holidays.

The programme aimed at stimulating grade 8 and 9 learners' interests in mathematics and science. This year, one of the rural schools in Mafikeng, Letlano Secondary School, was fortunate to attend.

According to the Mafikeng Campus Science Centre Manager, Lerato Molebatsi, the three-day programme is an annual project to enrich the rural disadvantaged school's curriculum and to equip learners by providing valuable hands-on learning experiences. World-class exhibits and experiments are used to increase their skill and understanding of science, technology and mathematics.

The centre is an excellent platform to stimulate the future generation's curiosity, develop inquiring minds and expose them to positive new experiences and different presentation and communication skills. The learners were also exposed to the practical educational science quizzes, where they learnt, and at same time, had fun.
