Media release by the South African National Roads Agency SOC on 2 June 2014

Issued by SANRAL
Pretoria, Jun 4, 2014

The South African National Roads Agency SOC (Sanral) is the registered owner of Erf 32524 Nomzamo, Strand, which property was declared as a National Road in terms of Section 40 of the National Roads Act 7 of 1998, for inclusion in a proposed rerouting of the N2 National Road.

As from January 2014, structures have been unlawfully erected on the property causing Sanral to obtain an interdict at the Western Cape High Court on 24 January 2014, under case number 1114/14, inter alia preventing any invasion on the property. This interdict is still in force.

This court order was contravened on numerous occasions, forcing Sanral to obtain the services of the sheriff and members of the South African Police Service to evict illegal invaders on the property.

It is an unfortunate situation. Sanral further regrets that it has turned violent. We urge the persons being evicted to co-operate with the police.

Sanral is committed to serve the larger public by maintaining national road reserves in terms of the agency's mandate.
