The South African National Road Agency confirmed it has appointed Engineering Services Executive, Koos Smit, as the acting Chief Executive Officer.

Nazir Alli, who served as CEO since its establishment in 1998, has retired after almost two decades at the helm.

Smit will be acting until the newly appointed CEO, Skhumbuzo Macozoma, takes over on 1 December 2016.

Smit has spent several years as an executive with SANRAL. His extensive experience with the agency and knowledge of the industry and its inherent challenges make him best placed to continue steering SANRAL in the interim.

Smit wished Alli well on his retirement. "We thank him for his immense contribution to the development of SANRAL and the expanding of South Africa's road infrastructure to contribute to the economic growth of the entire region. We would like him to enjoy his retirement with his family after serving his country diligently through SANRAL."
