Improved N14 route between Delareyville and Sannieshof is opened
Deputy Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga officially opened the rehabilitated and improved section 10 of the N14 route between the communities of Delareyville and Sannieshof.
The launch forms part of government's key national rollout of infrastructure delivery which has a high economic influence and relevance. The National Route 14 (N14), as it is known, is a vital link between Gauteng, North West, Northern Cape and Namibia.
The road was upgraded from 7.4m to 9.4m in width and raised by adding a new stone base and surfacing to improve the strength and drainage. The road pavement of the main street was recycled and strengthened.
"This section of the route experiences high volumes of traffic, with fairly high percentage of heavy vehicles due to the agricultural activities along the route. The need to rehabilitate and upgrade this section of the road was of paramount importance to sustain the traffic along the route for the next 20 years," said Sanral's CEO, Nazir Alli.
The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) and the Tswaing Local Municipality appointed service providers who made the improvements to the 37.6 kilometre stretch of road. The project was completed in 24 months and the contractors needed an extra 24 days to put final touches.
The project brought with it a number of job opportunities and skills development for the communities of Delareyville and Sannieshof. A total of 413 full-time jobs were created for the neighbouring communities during the construction of this project with total earnings of some R30.7 million. A total of 277 individuals were trained by accredited training service providers while all labourers employed had informal training. Some 15 SMME contractors were employed and earned R40.5 million in total.
"We always try to empower the communities where we operate. The skills training they received from the service providers will stay with them for the rest of their lives. The small businesses that were contracted were also able to raise their profiles having worked on this project;more galleries," concluded Alli.
