Teraco Data Centre Environments co-hosts AFRINIC's training programme in Johannesburg
"We are IPv6 ready!" AFRINIC and Teraco on joint training for network access providers.
Teraco Data Centre Environments co-hosted an IPv6 training with AFRINIC (The African Network Information Centre), the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for Africa, from 20 to 23 August 2013. AFRINIC is responsible for the fair distribution and management of Internet number resources, such as IP addresses, throughout the African region.
"As part of our support to the community within NAP Africa, a neutral layer two Internet peering exchange (IX) point, and our commitment to improve telecommunications in Africa, we made the decision to host the training programme," says Michele McCann of Teraco Data Centre Environments. The programme in August involved 24 network engineers from the NAPAfrica peering community.
Internet protocol version 6 (IPv6) is the latest version of the Internet protocol (IP), the communications protocol that allows devices to be connected to the Internet. IPv6 was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to deal with the long-anticipated problem of IPv4 address exhaustion. IPv6 is intended to replace IPv4, which still carries the vast majority of Internet traffic.
"In line with our capacity building strategy, we have offered, since 2005, trainings free of charge on Internet number resource management and IPv6. We are targeting network engineers, systems administrators, managers as well as decision-makers," states Adiel Akplogan, CEO of AFRINIC. "The training programme ensures that participants actually practice configuring and troubleshooting IPv6 networks and services, and provides them with the knowledge and skills to be able to do real deployments on their own networks."
