UKZN to host 13th Annual African Cultural Calabash & African Cuisine

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) will be hosting the 13th annual African Cultural Calabash and African Cuisine event.

Event organiser, Dinono Mdlanzi, says this year's theme, "Our Culture, Our Pride", celebrates and promotes African cultural heritage: "We want the audience to experience rich culture, a breath-taking concert and tasty cuisine that will leave them eager for more."

The concert features a line-up of KZN born artists performing music and dance that showcases African creativity.

UKZN African Music and Dance (AMD) Ensemble students will open the concert with vibrant percussion, while Eshowe born griot, Mbuso Khoza, will perform a Kiswahili prayer chant, followed by Amahubo repertoire with the KZN Heritage Ensemble.

Other artists include KZN's Maskandi maestro, Mfiliseni Magubane, contemporary S'cathamiya music performers, Thee Legacy, and male-only hostel group from KwaMashu, Amaphikankani.

The show will be followed by delicious cuisine, which includes Kenyan Pilau Sukuma wiki, samp, tripe, isigwaqane, nhloko, steamed bread, breyani and a variety of vegetarian dishes and salads.

Director of the African Music Project and senior lecturer in the School of Music at UKZN, Dr Patricia Opondo, says the Annual African Cultural Calabash provides a platform to celebrate various cultural traditions, and for exiting students to have hands-on experience in producing and hosting a large-scale cultural event as part of their training in the module African Music Outreach: Community Development.

The National Arts Council of South Africa, SAMRO Foundation and Concerts SA are co-sponsors of this 13th edition of the African Cultural Calabash.
