The University of KwaZulu-Natal joins the global community in mourning the passing of legendary musician and founding member of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Dr Bhekizizwe Joseph Shabalala, who passed away this morning after a long illness.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal awarded Dr Shabalala an Honorary Doctorate in Music in April 2010. The university bestowed on the award-winning musician its highest honour in recognition of his distinguished contribution to the advancement of the South African music industry. Dr Shabalala was also an Honorary Professor of Music at the university in the early 1990s. Music students of that time will remember his workshops on Isicathamiya.
