UKZN to host virtual John Dube lecture
UKZN’s School of Education and the School of Religion, Philosophy and Classics (SRPC) in the College of Humanities, in collaboration with the University Language Planning & Development Office, will virtually host the 2021 John Langalibalele Dube memorial lecture (Monday, 13 September to Thursday, 16 September: 3:30pm to 5:30pm).
The four-day event will be headlined by local and international scholars, who will pay tribute to the life of Dr JL Dube, who would have celebrated his 150th birthday in 2021. In the context of the current challenges facing South Africa and the world, including COVID-19, GBV, climate change, poverty, inequalities and societal fragmentation and conflict, we mark this anniversary of the birth of this African intellectual with a series of lectures to reflect on his legacy and how universities and other stakeholders might draw on his philosophy and teachings to effect social change.
On Monday, member of the WHO African Regional Expert Committee on Traditional Medicine for COVID-19 Professor Nceba Gqaleni will speak on 'African Traditional Medicine and COVID-19 Vaccines'. On Tuesday, former political prisoner and author Ngila Michael Muendane and PhD candidate in political science Lukhona Mnguni will talk about the 'Land and Climate Change Higher Education'.
Wednesday’s session will feature professor of Cultural Heritage Studies at the University of Lincoln, UK, Professor Heather Hughes and research anthropologist Dr Deborah Mindry, who will focus on the theme: 'Unsilencing Nokuthela and Angelina Dube'. The final lecture on Thursday will be delivered by professor of French and the Liberal Arts at Carleton College (Minnesota, USA), Prof Cherif Keita, who will speak on 'Celebrating 150 years of Dr JL Dube'.
The DVC: College of Humanities Professor Nhlanhla Mkhize invites stakeholders and the public to attend the four-day event as a way of reflecting on and engaging with the legacy and teachings of JL Dube.
