VUT hosts third softball tournament for cancer awareness
Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide; it's a disease that affects many, both directly and indirectly. The Vaal University of Technology's Softball team believes in the importance of paying homage to the fallen heroes who battled this disease as well as recognising those who have survived.
The Softball Cancer Awareness Tournament, which started in 2015, is organised by the VUT Softball Club in partnership with the VUT Sports and Recreation Department as well as other supporters.
"We hope to create an awareness of cancer through our sport and show support to those affected by this disease, which has life-changing effects. We want to encourage people to test [for the disease] and promote a healthy lifestyle and the development of sports in the Vaal and other parts of the country and continent," said Godfrey Nwanekah, who plays for the team, VUT Softball Club Chairperson and is also one of the organisers.
The tournament takes place on Saturday, 7 of October at VUT Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark from 7.30am. Teams participating are: Bears Softball Club; BMC Softball Club; Wells Softball Club; Police Softball Club; Titans Softball Club and Gata Softball Club - all representing Botswana.
The teams representing South Africa are: Tembisa Classic Softball Club; Red Sox Softball Club; University of Limpopo Softball Club; VUT Softball Club; Raiders Softball Club and the South Africa U-19 National Team.
