AMBIO supports VUT water research
Qhawekazi Memani and Lungelo Magwaza
The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is proud of its involvement in water research and conservation and has developed a laboratory that specialises in microbiological testing of tap water, borehole water, river water, bottled water, and sewage effluent.
The laboratory was established nine years ago, and was transferred from Sasol as per an agreement with VUT, as a water testing laboratory. The laboratory resided with Sasol and was transferred to AMBIO VUT after Sasol decided to downsize. The agreement was that Sasol would submit samples to AMBIO after accreditation had been achieved. AMBIO has developed to such an extent that it was recently granted South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) accreditation.
The company, which offers microbiology and ecotoxicology, provides testing and other services for a wide range of municipalities, industries, companies and the community. Their goal is to provide scientifically sound data and assist clients in meeting their environmental requirements.
AMBIO Environmental Management has partnered with VUT to support students with their research.
AMBIO currently functions with three technicians, two of whom are enrolled for a master's degree, and one PhD Biotechnology student. AMBIO will also be able to offer workplace integrated learning to a few students.
