Thabang Magare, a VUT Alumnus and a qualified chartered accountant (CA), is passionate about his career in financial systems.

He completed his National Diploma in Financial Information Systems (FIS) in 2001 at the then Vaal Triangle Technikon (now VUT), Klerksdorp campus. He believes that the knowledge he gained from VUT has been invaluable to his career.

He now works at Deloitte Africa leading audits in financial services, where information is at the heart of various businesses.

He says the best experience he obtained at VUT was as a member of the Student Representative Council (SRC) as this honed his leadership skills and taught him some valuable life lessons, especially about the consequences of choices - both good and bad.

"Currently I am enjoying what I am doing as a leader within the Deloitte Africa business... I would like to study further and perhaps get back into teaching again," he said.

His advice to current students would be to make the best of the opportunities they have, both from an academic and a social point of view.

"These are the best years of your life, so live them to the fullest. Some of the relationships you establish now will last a lifetime."

To the VUT community he said: "You only live once, live your best possible life, rich with experiences and knowledge."
